- If you enjoy word games, but miss
-
- the strategy of head-to-head
-
- competition and the thrill that comes
-
- from games of chance, THE PHRASE THAT
-
- PAYS might be just what you've been
-
- waiting for. Mind-teasing puzzles,
-
- intense competition, and a spinning
-
- wheel that either brings riches or
-
- anihilates your savings are all a
-
- part of this computer game.
-
- You can either play alone or
-
- compete against up to three other
-
- players as you test your ability to
-
- recognize words and phrases from only
-
- a few revealed letters. But after you
-
- recognize the phrase, do you solve it
-
- immediately or do you dare bankruptcy
-
- and try to win more money? This
-
- dilemma among others sets THE PHRASE
-
- THAT PAYS apart from other games.
-
- Before the game begins, you first
-
- select the number of players and then
-
- type their names.
-
- The computer then goes to the
-
- playing screen which is divided into
-
- three sections. In the middle
-
- section are each player's dollar
-
- totals. At the bottom of the screen,
-
- the computer requests that the first
-
- player "spin the wheel" by pressing
-
- the space-bar. The wheel will
-
- continue to spin until you release the
-
- space-bar.
-
- After releasing the space-bar, the
-
- wheel will begin to gradually slow
-
- until one number rests by the
-
- pointers. This number is the amount of
-
- money you get if you correctly guess a
-
- letter in the puzzle.
-
- After the dollar amount has been
-
- decided, the computer reveals the
-
- blanks of the puzzle at the top of
-
- the screen and gives it a catagory
-
- like "person" or "thing".
-
- You are then asked whether you want
-
- to (s)olve the puzzle or (g)uess a
-
- letter. If you type "g", you will
-
- then have 90 seconds to type a letter
-
- you think is in the puzzle.
-
- If it is, the letter is revealed on
-
- the puzzle, your dollar amount is
-
- multiplied by the number of times the
-
- letter occurs and added to your
-
- total, and you get to spin again.
-
- Be sure to note that only
-
- consonants can be used to increase
-
- your dollar amount--- vowels cost
-
- $300.
-
- If you guess a letter not in the
-
- puzzle or take over 90 seconds,
-
- control of the game goes over to the
-
- next player. Wrong guesses are
-
- displayed below the puzzle so you
-
- don't repeat mistakes.
-
- When you think you know the answer
-
- to the puzzle, you may either solve
-
- it right away or gamble on making
-
- more money by guessing the remaining
-
- consonants.(But be careful--- if you
-
- hit a "-$$$" you lose all of your
-
- money and your turn.)
-
- If you choose to solve the puzzle,
-
- just type "s" when you are prompted.
-
- You then type your solution under the
-
- puzzle.
-
- Once the puzzle is guessed, the
-
- computer shows the winner and lists
-
- the other players' dollar amounts.
-
- You then get the option of playing
-
- another of THE PHRASE THAT PAYS's
-
- challenging puzzles.
