  8.   If you enjoy word games, but miss
  9.  
  10. the strategy of head-to-head
  11.  
  12. competition and the thrill that comes
  13.  
  14. from games of chance, THE PHRASE THAT
  15.  
  16. PAYS might be just what you've been
  17.  
  18. waiting for. Mind-teasing puzzles,
  19.  
  20. intense competition, and a spinning
  21.  
  22. wheel that either brings riches or
  23.  
  24. anihilates your savings are all a
  25.  
  26. part of this computer game.
  27.  
  28.   You can either play alone or
  29.  
  30. compete against up to three other
  31.  
  32. players as you test your ability to
  33.  
  34. recognize words and phrases from only
  35.  
  36. a few revealed letters. But after you
  37.  
  38. recognize the phrase, do you solve it
  39.  
  40. immediately or do you dare bankruptcy
  41.  
  42. and try to win more money? This
  43.  
  44. dilemma among others sets THE PHRASE
  45.  
  46. THAT PAYS apart from other games.
  47.  
  48.   Before the game begins, you first
  49.  
  50. select the number of players and then
  51.  
  52. type their names.
  53.  
  54.   The computer then goes to the
  55.  
  56. playing screen which is divided into
  57.  
  58. three sections. In the middle
  59.  
  60. section are each player's dollar
  61.  
  62. totals. At the bottom of the screen,
  63.  
  64. the computer requests that the first
  65.  
  66. player "spin the wheel" by pressing
  67.  
  68. the space-bar.  The wheel will
  69.  
  70. continue to spin until you release the
  71.  
  72. space-bar.
  73.  
  74.   After releasing the space-bar, the
  75.  
  76. wheel will begin to gradually slow
  77.  
  78. until one number rests by the
  79.  
  80. pointers. This number is the amount of
  81.  
  82. money you get if you correctly guess a
  83.  
  84. letter in the puzzle.
  85.  
  86.   After the dollar amount has been
  87.  
  88. decided, the computer reveals the
  89.  
  90. blanks of the puzzle at the top of
  91.  
  92. the screen and gives it a catagory
  93.  
  94. like "person" or "thing".
  95.  
  96.   You are then asked whether you want
  97.  
  98. to (s)olve the puzzle or (g)uess a
  99.  
  100. letter. If you type "g", you will
  101.  
  102. then have 90 seconds to type a letter
  103.  
  104. you think is in the puzzle.
  105.  
  106.   If it is, the letter is revealed on
  107.  
  108. the puzzle, your dollar amount is
  109.  
  110. multiplied by the number of times the
  111.  
  112. letter occurs and added to your
  113.  
  114. total, and you get to spin again.
  115.  
  116.   Be sure to note that only
  117.  
  118. consonants can be used to increase
  119.  
  120. your dollar amount--- vowels cost
  121.  
  122. $300.
  123.  
  124.   If you guess a letter not in the
  125.  
  126. puzzle or take over 90 seconds,
  127.  
  128. control of the game goes over to the
  129.  
  130. next player. Wrong guesses are
  131.  
  132. displayed below the puzzle so you
  133.  
  134. don't repeat mistakes.
  135.  
  136.   When you think you know the answer
  137.  
  138. to the puzzle, you may either solve
  139.  
  140. it right away or gamble on making
  141.  
  142. more money by guessing the remaining
  143.  
  144. consonants.(But be careful--- if you
  145.  
  146. hit a "-$$$" you lose all of your
  147.  
  148. money and your turn.)
  149.  
  150.   If you choose to solve the puzzle,
  151.  
  152. just type "s" when you are prompted.
  153.  
  154. You then type your solution under the
  155.  
  156. puzzle.
  157.  
  158.   Once the puzzle is guessed, the
  159.  
  160. computer shows the winner and lists
  161.  
  162. the other players' dollar amounts.
  163.  
  164. You then get the option of playing
  165.  
  166. another of THE PHRASE THAT PAYS's
  167.  
  168. challenging puzzles.
